Umatilla Chemical Depot - Groundwater Treatment O&M

Lucas provided the Operations and Maintenance of a Groundwater Extraction and Treatment System (GETS) located at the U.S. Army Corp of Engineer’s (USACE) Umatilla Chemical Depot located in Umatilla, Oregon from 2014 to 2020.

The GETS is a 1,300 gpm Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) system consisting of 4 carbon containing vessels of 7,000 gallons each.  The system was fed by 5 Extraction Wells and four infiltration galleries.  The system utilized a programmable logic control system (PLC) that enabled remote monitoring and operations of the treatment system operations.

Lucas was responsible for operations and maintenance of this system.  This included monitoring of the system operations, trouble shooting of the system when performance was running out of operation parameters, monthly routine inspection and conduct of maintenance as required.

During the 7 years of our responsibility for the system O&M the GETS experience record levels of performance and efficiency since in initially began operation in 1996.

Hanford 100K West Spent Fuel/ Sludge Basin Operations Support Services

Lucas provided senior level operations management, mid-level and first line supervision of the operations and maintenance of the Hanford Site’s 100K West Spent Fuel/Sludge Basin subcontracted to CH2MHill.

The 100K West Basin was used to store the 2100 metric tons of spent nuclear fuel from Hanford’s N Reactor operations which ended in 1987. In late 2000 efforts were undertaken to process, package, and ship to storage the spent fuel material. Lucas staff held senior level project management positions to lead the successful and safe removal operations which completed in the mid-2000s.  Additionally, Lucas operations staff were involved in the successful final clean out and preparation for demolition of the 100K East fuel storage basin.

Lucas personnel were involved in all phases of the work including the planning, testing and mock-up of the sludge retrieval and packaging equipment, as well as the transportation to the storage facility.
